“The Interwar Order Revealed – or, how the Italy-Abyssinian war changed the world”

This lecture looks back at the way the European powers sought to use the League of Nations to stabilize the European settlement and the imperial order after 1919.  It argues that the 1935-6 Italian attack on Ethiopia – and the public debates that generated in Geneva and around the world – at once exposed and delegitimized that order, as anti-imperialists and African diasporic groups made themselves heard.  1935, and not 1945, was the beginning of the end for the European imperial order.
